Akshaya Tritiya – The Day of Boundless Success

Akshaya Tritiya, also known as Akha Teej, is one of the most auspicious days for the Hindus. It falls on the third day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Vaishakha, thus the word ‘Tritiya’. The word ‘Akshaya’ means undiminishing. Therefore, it is believed that any task undertaken or any work done on this promising day results in success and prosperity.

Akshaya Tritiya is believed to be ruled by Lord Vishnu, who is a part of the Hindu God Trinity and is considered to be the preserver of the world. This is because it is believed that on the day of Akshaya Tritiya is the birth anniversary of the sixth incarnation of Lord Vishnu – Parashurama, thus Parashurama Jayanti is also celebrated on this day. However, due to the stars and their positions, during certain years, the Parashurama Jayanti tithi may fall one day before Akshaya Tritiya.

Vedic astrologers consider Akshaya Tritiya as a very auspicious day that is free from all kinds of fatal effects. As per Hindu astrology, it is believed that three lunar days – Yugadi, Vijaya Dashami, and Akshaya Tritiya – are so auspicious that they do not need any muhurat to perform any kind of auspicious work. Because Akshaya Tritiya is associated with gains and wealth, any deed performed on this day bears profits and growth. This is why many people undertake new ventures on this auspicious day like buying gold and valuables, investing in property or car, house warming, construction, or anything else. It is believed that Lord Kubera himself worships Goddess Lakshmi for prosperity and well-being on this day, which is why people also buy gold with the trust that it will result in increased fortune.

Many people also consider donating things as one of the best tasks to be done on this day as they consider it the purest of the holy days. They believe that donating things to the poor and needy, or to Brahmins, reap good wishes and luck. People donate water with betel nut to Brahmins in desire for wealth, seven coconuts for moksha of ancestors, clothes for longer life, shoes for attaining place in heaven, bedding for happiness, chandan for avoiding accidents, and umbrellas for being safeguarded against any obstacles in life. As the word ‘Akshaya’ means never diminishing, the benefits of doing any kind of Japa, Yagna, Daan-Punya, and Pitru-Tarpan on this day also never diminish, and stay with one forever.

So, you can perform any of these deeds and donations, and attain good wishes of the poor, and blessings of the Brahmins. If you don’t wish to do anything else, you can do the least by cleansing your home and performing a Puja to worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi by offering flowers and tulsi, and doing mantra jaaps.
