Hanuman Jayanti – The birthday of Lord Hanuman

Hanuman Jayanti is the day of celebrating the birth of Lord Hanuman – the celebration of his bravery and ardent devotion to hid Lord – Lord Rama. According to the Hindu calendar, this day falls on the 15^th day of the Chaitra month. This year, this auspicious date is to fall on 11^th April 2017.

However, various regions in Southern India celebrate this festival during different times of the year. In Tamil Nadu and Kerala, this event is celebrated as Hanumath Jayanti in the month of Marghazi during Margashirsha Amavasya, believing the fact that Lord Hanuman was born on Amavasya. In Karnataka, the festival is popularly known as Hanuman Vratam, and is observed on Shukla Paksha Trayodashi during the Margashirsha month. In Orissa, the festival is celebrated on the first day of the Vaishka month of the Oriya calendar; whereas in Andhra Pradesh, it is celebrated for 41 days starting on Chaitra Purnima and terminating on the tenth day during Krishna Paksha in the Vaishakha month.

The birth of Lord Hanuman

Lord Hanuman was born to the Apsara Anjani who was cursed by a learned Vaanara (monkey), meditating in a jungle. For some reason, he cursed her to turn into a Vaanara that very instant, saying that she will be freed from the curse only when she gives birth to a Vaanara who would be Lord Shiva’s incarnation. Repenting, she resorted to meditation, which pleased Lord Shiva who decided to grant her the child that would be his incarnation. He thus ordered the Wind God – Vaayu – to bring Anjani some food. With a swirl, Lord Vaayu picked up the ‘payasam’ kept at Raja Dashrath’s balcony for his wife to beget a son, and dropped it in front of Anjani. She consumed the payasam, and gave birth to a mightyful son. Lord Vaayu admitted that it was him who brought the food, which makes him the rightful father. This is the reason Lord Hanuman is also known as ‘Vayuputra Hanuman’ or ‘Pavanputra Hanuman’.

Why is Lord Hanuman Worshipped on Saturday with Betel Leaf and Oil

Why is Lord Hanuman worshipped on Saturdays?

It is believed that once Ravana had captured Lord Shani in his Lanka. It was Lord Hanuman who had rescued him from there. Hanuman once taught Lord Shani the lesson of modesty and united him with his father – the Sun God – who otherwise was not on good terms with him. Feeling obliged, Lord Shani promised Hanuman that all his devotees would remain unaffected from Shani Dosh if they worship Hanuman on Saturdays.

Why is Lord Hanuman worshipped with betel leaves and oil?

During the war of Lord Rama and Ravana, when Ravana was trying to defeat Lord Rama, and Hanuman was carrying Lord Rama on his back, Ravana started attacking Hanuman. Hanuman did not let him or the Lord be killed, but he got lots of hurt and wounds from the war. It is believed that Lord Rama himself applied oil on the wounds of Hanuman to relieve him of pain. Since, then this tradition of applying oil in Lord Hanuman’s temples has been followed.

It is also believed that Sita Mata spotted Hanuman in a betel leaf garden after the defeat of Ravana in the war. When Hanuman bowed down to touch Sita Mata’s feet to seek her blessings, she showered some betel leaves in Hanuman to bless him. This is one story that has Lord Hanuman being offered betel leaves since then. Another story depicts that when Hanuman conveyed the message of Lord Rama’s coming to Lanka for Sita Mata’s rescue, she garlanded Hanuman with betel leaves as a token of joy and appreciation. This is another reason why Lord Hanuman is offered betel leaves.
