Why is Baisakhi Important to Different Religions Across India?

Baisakhi, mainly considered as the festival of Sikhs, is the most important festival of the state of Punjab, where it is celebrated with extreme zeal and enthusiasm. It marks the day when Shri Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Sikh Guru, paved the way for the “Khalsa Panth”. However, this festival is also celebrated in various other states too, and is known by different names in different regions. It is known as Rangoli Bihu in Assam, Puthandu in Tamil Nadu, Vaishakha in Bihar, Naba Brasha in Bengal, and Pooram Vishu in Kerala.

Baisakhi celebration in Sikhism
As per the tradition, Sikhs wake up early on this day and dress up in new clothes. They visit the Gurudwara to seek blessings of the Guru Granth Sahib. The most visited holy place during this festival is Anandpur. Holy verses are chanted from the Guru Granth Sahib, and keertans are played by the Panj Pyaare, followed by offering the holy water – amrit – to the devotees. Also, a ‘Langar’ is arranged for where devotees are sevred community lunch along with the famous ‘Karah Prasad’. In the evening, a procession is carried out by the Sikhs with devotional chants of Satnam and Waheguru, and the traditional Bhangra and Gidda dance forms.

Significance of Baisakhi for farmers
Baisakhi is considered the most important by the farmers of our country, as it marks the time for harvest of Rabi crops. Farmers also visit the gurudwaras on this day after dressing up in new clothes to seek blessings for a good agricultural season ahead, and to express gratitude to God for the good harvest.

Significance of Baisakhi in Hinduism
The festival of Baisakhi is also very important for the Hindus as the day signifies when Swami Dayanand Saraswati founded the Arya Samaj in 1875. The Arya Samaj is a reformed sect of the Hindus who are devoted to the Vedas for spiritual guidance and have discarded idol worship. This is why Hindus also consider this day as very important.

Astrological significance of Baisakhi
Baisakhi is generally celebrated on 13th April every year, while it is celebrated on 14th April once in every 36 years. This change in date is because the date of Baiakhi is calculated according to the solar calendar. Baisakhi marks the sun’s entry into the Mesh Rashi. This is the reason Baisakhi is also known as Mesha Sankranti. This day is also considered one of the most auspicious for carrying out various astrological Pujas. People who are negatively influenced by the Mangal and Surya grahas can be protected by performing appropriate Pujas on this auspicious day.
