Celebrate The Birthday of Lord Rama with MakeMyPuja

Ram Navami is the day when Lord Rama is believed to have incarnated on Earth. This is the day that is most revered and respected by the devotees of Lord Rama. It falls on the ninth day, that is the last day, of the Chaitra month of the Hindu calendar, and this year it is to fall on 5th April 2017. Ram Navami is a celebration of the birth of the Lord himself, making it one of the most sacred, divine, and pious day of the year. Son of King Dashratha and Queen Kaushalya, and consort of Mata Sita, Lord Rama is one of the most important incarnations of Lord Vishnu. He was the 7th avatar from the ‘Dashavatar’ of Lord Vishnu.

Lord Rama is also known as ‘Maryada Purshottam’ meaning the perfect man, and has been glorified as being the ‘Lord of Virtue’ in Hinduism. He took birth to fight Adharma (immorality, evil, and vice), and replace it with Dharma (conformity to religious virtues). This is why he is always referred to when ‘victory of good over evil’ is thought or spoken about. His era of Ram Rajya witnessed the victory of morality and justice over sin and wickedness.

On this day, temples dedicated to Lord Rama are decorated beautifully with flowers and lights, and the statues of the Lord along with those of Mata Sita and Lakshman are also adorned and ornamented. Devotees observe fast on this day and sing hymns of the Lord. The story of Ramayana is also narrated on this day for the devotees to hear and connect to the Lord. Also, processions are carried out by the devotees in honour of Lord Rama in the Northern parts of India. People dressed up as Lord Rama, Mata Sita, Lakshman, and Hanuman are seated on a richly decorated chariot, that is moved through the streets of various cities, depicting the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. On the other hand, devotees in the Southern parts of India perform ‘Kalyanotsavam’ – the wedding celebration of Lord Rama and Mata Sita – as part of processions on the streets. There are other devotes who celebrate the occasion as a 9 day festival by organizing an Akhand Paath of the Ramacharitamanas. This involves Havan, keertan, bhajans, Aarti, and distribution of prasad. Many devotees also observe fast for all the nine days of the Chaitra Navratri to get blessings from the Lord; while there are others who observe fast only on the first, fifth, and ninth day of the Navratri festival.

Let us all come together this year and celebrate Ram Navami to pray to the Lord for blessing us with integrity, purity, morality, truth, justice, and goodness. Because Lord Rama is ultimately a form of Lord Vishnu, you can also move towards pleasing him by praying to any of his form (avatar). One such means is by performing a Satyanarayan Puja. Satyanarayan is also an avatar of Lord Vishnu, and people perform this Puja on a full moon day or on special occasions like graduation, new job, marriage, new business, purchase of a new home, etc. You can also pray to the Almighty to seek his blessings by performing the Satyanarayan Puja in the most appropriate way by appointing proficient and expert MakeMyPuja Pandits.

Importance of Gauri Puja or Gangaur Festival for Indian Women

India has a rich union of diverse forms of traditions and festivals across all its states. Every region of the country follows different traditions. Today, we are going to speak about one of the most colourful and joyful celebrations followed in the states of Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh – the Gangaur festival. Following the festival of Holi, the traditions of this festival are followed for 18 days with great zeal and passion by women as a devotion to Lord Shiva and his consort Goddess Parvati. Lord Shiva is known as “Gana” and Goddess Parvati as “Gauri”, thus the name combined forms the word “Gangaur”. Goddess Parvati is a symbol of virtue and devotion, and is considered a legendary figure by married women, which is why this festival is held particularly in her honour.

Both married and unmarried women perform the traditions of this festival. While married women worship the deities for marital bliss and happiness, unmarried girls worship them to get a suitable match. During the days of the festival, women bury the seeds of wheat and barley in the ashes of the fire of Holika, and water them every day until they germinate. They observe fast for 18 days and have only one meal a day. Idols of both Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are made from clay and are decorated with colourful clothes and ornaments. On the last day of the celebration, these idols are carried on the heads of the women and taken to a water body. The idols are then submerged in water, depicting the grand farewell of the Goddess by her beloved worshippers with Lord Shiva to their home.
This entire festival is celebrated with rich tradition, belief and rituals, and depicts the colourful and musical heritage of the state of Rajasthan. There is a feeling of love spread all around on this occasion. Because this festival celebrates the union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, the festivity also gives an opportunity to tribal men and women to come in contact with one another, meet and interact freely, so that they can select partners of their choice to get married to.

The most prominent celebrations take place in Rajasthan, in the particular cities of Udaipur, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Bikaner and Nathdwara. Ghewar, a popular sweet dish of Rajasthan is distributed between families, relatives, and friends on this occasion. This year, this amazing festival is falling on 30th of March. If you wish to get the feel of this lovely festival, you must visit the cities of Rajasthan.
If you are a married woman looking for marital bliss, or an unmarried girl looking for a life partner, you can also engage yourself in this festival. However, if your customs do not allow you to do so, there is another way out. You can get in touch with MakeMyPuja Pandits and have a Gauri Shankar Puja performed, which is equivalent of this festival in pleasing Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati for the same purposes. It is believed that Mata Sita also performed this Puja before getting married, in order to have a husband like Lord Rama.

How Significant Is The Festival Of Gudi Padwa?

One of the most auspicious dates of the Hindu calendar, Gudi Padwa is basically a Maharashtrian festival, where the natives consider this day to be the New Year Day, and very sudpicious for any new beginnings. The word ‘Padwa’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Padhavo’ meaning the brightest phase of the moon. The symbolic events of the Hindu calendar are marked as per the phase of the sun and moon; thus bringing in this auspicious day every year somewhere in the end of March or beginning of April. This day falls on the first day of Chaitra Navratri, and this year the auspicious date of 29th March 2017.

The Marathas began the tradition of unfurling their flag on the first day of Chaitra Navratri, ever since Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj hoisted the flag on this day. Since then, this ritual has been followed every year on Gudi Padwa. For Maharashtrians, Gudi Padwa is a state holiday, and marks the start of the feasting period up till Akshaya Tritiya. Apart from the Maharashtrians, this day is celebrated by people in different regions and of different religions by different names. Gudi Padwa is popular as Ugadi in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh; Yugadi in Karnataka; Sajibu Nongma Panba Cheiraoba in Manipur; Samwatsar Padvo in Goa and Konkan; Navroz amongst Parsis; Cheti Chand amongst Sindhis; and Navreh amongst Kashmiri Pandits.

Significance of Gudi Padwa
·        The significance of Gudi Padwa dates back to when Lord Brahma re-created the world after it was destroyed due to Pralaya, a huge massive flood. This has been stated in the Brahma Purana; and people celebrate this day to thank the Lord for his act of recreating mankind.
·        For the farming communities, this day is of utmost importance as it is considered the first day of the harvest season. Gudi Padwa marks the end of the Rabi harvesting season, and sets in the Kharif harvesting season.
·        On the day of Gudi Padwa, the sun is believed to position itself above the point of intersection between the Meridians and the Equator, which makes the seasonal change and beginning of spring or Vasant Rutu. Also, the sun is at the starting point of entering the first zodiac sign – Aries – on this day.

Gudi Padwa is one of the three and a half auspicious day; the other two being Akshaya Tritiya and Vijaya Dashami. In Hinduism, this is auspiciously known as the ‘Sade-Teen Muhurat’ when any kind of new beginnings can be commenced without looking for a particular auspicious time. So, whatever new beginning you have been waiting for – buying a piece of land, buying a property, entering a new home, starting a new business, or buying a new car – sign up for this day to avail the best benefit out of your possession. You can also have MakeMyPuja Pandits perform an appropriate Puja to help seek God’s blessings in every new venture, as they are experts in performing result-oriented Bhoomi Puja, Car Puja, Griha Pravesham Puja, New Business Puja, and lots more.

Why Is Gudi Padwa Celebrated?

Although the standard calendar that we all follow comprises of twelve months, with January being the first month of every year, different religions and communities in India have their own distinct calendars. One such calendar is the Hindu calendar, wherein the New Year is believed to take place on the auspicious day of Gudi Padwa. This day marks the beginning of the New Lunisolar Year, and falls on the first day of the Chaitra month. It falls during late March or early April every year; this year falling on 29th of March.

Different regions – different names
Known as Gudi Padwa in Maharashtra, this festival is celebrated across the country under different names given by different religions and states. In the Konkan and Goa region, it is known as Samvatsar Padvo; in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh it is called Ugadi; in Manipur it is named as Sajibu Nongma Panba Cheiraoba; in Kashmir it is known as Navreh; and the Sindhis call it as Cheti Chand. Whatever the festival is called, however it is celebrated, but the essence remains to be the celebration of auspicious new beginnings.

What is the legend behind the celebration of Gudi Padwa?
As per the legend, it is believed that Lord Brahma had re-created the universe on this day after the world was completely destroyed by massive floods that were called ‘Pralaya’. Lord Brahma along with Lord Vishnu, in his Matsya avatar, gave re-birth to mankind. This is why this day signifies new beginnings. Bhramadhwaj, a special flag, is hoisted on this day to honour Lord Brahma for his act of recreating the earth.
Another legend states that the raising of Brahmadhwaj is in honour of the coronotaion of Lord Rama after he returned to Ayodhya from Banvaas. Lord Rama was crowned to regain his kingdom on this day. The ‘Gudi’ that is set up on the main entrance of every devotee’s home symbolizes the sign of victory and happiness.

What is the Sade-Teen Muhurat?
When life was again created, the Golden Satyug was begun. As the name depicts, it was the era of truth and justice. As per Brahma Purana, the Hindu calendar carries a very significant period of three and a half days known as ‘Sade-Teen Muhurat’ at the onset of Satyug, wherein Gudi Padwa marks the first day. This is why people start a new business, purchase cars, sign up for properties, and start every new venture on this day.

If you are planning to start a new venture or get your hands on a new possession, don’t forget to carry out an appropriate Puja to seek blessings from God to help you in every way. If you are planning to start any kind of construction on a piece of land on this day to build up your home or office, you must perform a Bhoomi Puja to seek blessings from Mother Earth. Similarly, for any kind of purchase of a new car, new home, or new office, you must worship Lord Ganesha to bless you and stay with you throughout your relationship with your valued possession. And, don't worry about the Pujas. MakeMyPuja Pandits are always available to help you perform appropriate Pujas all through the year to help you gain blessings from God in every possible way.

Worshipping Goddess Saraswati to be Blessed with Education

With schools all set to take up examinations of students in the month of March, children are all terrified and panicking. Parents are even more anxious and worried about their children’s examinations and education. This is the time when parents and children alike start praying all the more to God to help them with the papers. Speaking of education and prayers leads us to one very important deity in Hinduism who is considered to be the goddess of education and knowledge – Goddess Saraswati.

Considered to be the divine consort of Lord Brahma, Goddess Saraswati is regarded to be one with power of speech and wisdom. She is also regarded as the eliminator of chaos and confusion, and one who brings calmness and comfort.  She is devotedly respected and regarded as the goddess of knowledge, wisdom, learning, and arts in the religion of Hinduism. Dressed in a simple white saree, and riding a white swan or sitting on a white lotus, she has the appearance of piousness and calmness. She holds four significant accessories in her four hands – the Veena Sitar signifying melody and creativity, the Vedas signifying knowledge, bead garland signifying spirituality, and a water pot signifying the reservoir of life.

Other than in India, Goddess Saraswati is worshipped as a goddess of knowledge in Nepal, Japan, Bali, Vietnam, and Myanmar too. In fact, Saraswati Puja is done in schools and other educational institutions too. She is worshipped by students and learners to accomplish their learning of education and arts. Although Vasant Panchami is considered the biggest day to worship her as it is her birthday, she is worshipped throughout the year with equal devotion by those willing to pursue any kind of learning and education. She is also worshipped by artists, mainly those related to music. If pleased, she can grant devotees with lots of knowledge, learning, wisdom and talent.

Also known as Goddess Gayatri, she is considered to be an important part of the trinity of goddesses; Goddess Parvati and Goddess Lakshmi being the other two parts. Where Should You Celebrate The Festival of Colours?

Dhuleti (or Holi as it is commonly called) brings to mind the images of colours, water, water guns, water balloons, and buckets filled with water. It is considered the most colourful festival of India. However, looking deep into the culture of India, Holi is not only the festival of colours for people throughout the country. The festival is full of a multitude activities taking place in different states of India. These range from age-old traditions to unique customs to modern dance and music. Depending on the kind of experience you would like to have this Holi, you can decide on where you would like to travel this year.

Lathmaar Holi in Barsaana
Barsaana, a town near Mathura, celebrates Holi in a very interesting way. It is believed in Hindu mythology that Radha lived in Barsaana and Krishna in Nandgaon. This is why there is an age old tradition being followed in the town of Barsaana, where men from Nandgaon come to the town to play Holi. But, instead of playing with gulaal, the women of Barsaana are armed with sticks to playfully beat the men. This is the reason the festival is more popularly known as ‘Lathmaar Holi’ here. This tradition has been followed for centuries and is best witnessed at the Ladliji temple, where play of colour, sweets, thandai and spiritual songs of Radha-Krishna add to the fun.

Traditional Holi in Mathura and Vrindavan
If you want to really play with colours and water, and want to relive the mischievous times of Lord Krishna and the gopis, Mathura and Vrindavan are the places you should be. The cities of Mathura (the birthplace of Lord Krishna) and Vrindavan (where he spent his childhood) are the best during the festival of Holi. A colourful and musical procession takes place from the temples to the rivers and then to the Holi Gate. Banke Bihari and Dwarkadhish temples are those that you must not miss out visiting.

Folk Holi in West Bengal
If you are looking for a flavor of tribal and folk this Holi, then the Purulia district in West Bengal is the place for you. Known as the ‘Basanta Utsav’ the festival is organized by the villagers and is celebrated for three days. This has been the culture of the state since the times of Rabindranath Tagore. This Utsav is an occasion presenting the wide variety of unique folk dance and music. What you must not miss are the Chau dance, Darbari Jhurmur, Natua dance, and the songs of West Bengal’s Baul musicians. Experience Holi in complete carnival style!

Warrior Holi in Punjab
Celebrate Holi in warrior style at Anandpur Sahib in Punjab! Instead of colours, you will get to see a demonstration of Sikh military expertise by the blue clothed Nihangs here. The occasion known as Hola Mohalla demonstrates the Sikh men involving in martial arts, mock sword fights, acrobatic military exercises, turban tying, and ‘gathka’ – the traditional form of martial art. This kind of celebration dates back to 1701 when it was started by Guru Gobind Singh Ji as a protest to the rising intolerance of the Mughals.

Simple Holi in Karnataka
Holi is generally said to be a North India festival, so you would not consider the southern states to be involved in these festivities. However, Hampi in Karnataka is an exception. If you are looking to play Holi somewhere in the South, you must definitely go to Hampi to experience a simple yet fun-filled two-day Holi festival. You will see the entire town playing Holi in the morning accompanied by drumming and dancing against the backdrop of the ruins of the grand Vijayanagar Empire. And then, in the evening, you can see them enjoying in the waters of the River Tungabhadra.

So, what is your pick on Holi this year? Looking forward to a traditional, folk, energetic or simple Holi? If you are willing to travel somewhere to enjoy this exciting festival, choose your place and plan up soon because you don’t have much time left. And for those, who are willing to stay home and celebrate a festival with complete rituals and prayers, don’t forget to involve yourself in the Holika Dahan observed a night before the festival of colours begins. You can get in touch with MakeMyPuja Pandits to help you with any kind of assistance needed for conducting any Puja in the most rightful manner.

What Is The Importance of Holika Dahan?

Holi is not only a festival of colours; it has a deep connection with Hindu mythology too. Holi generally brings to mind the images of colours, water balloons, water guns and buckets filled with colourful water. But, other than this side of fun, laughter and celebrations, the festival also has a religious side filled with faith and devotion. One night before the colour and fun-filled celebrations, the rituals of Holika Dahan are performed. The legend behind this ritual is symbolic of the victory of good over evil.

What is the legend behind the ritual of Holika Dahan?
Hiranyakashyap was an egoistic king and a ruthless ruler, who did a Tapasya and prayed to Lord Brahma, who was pleased by the devotion and gave the king a boon. Hiranyakashyap asked the Lord to be blessed in a way that he could not be killed by any human or animal; by any sort of weapon; during day or night; neither on the ground nor in the sky; and neither within nor outside a residence. After being blessed by such a boon, the king thought he is blessed by immortality which made him even more egoistic and ruthless. He forced everyone to worship only him. But, his son Prahlad went against him and worshipped Lord Vishnu. This angered his father so much that he decided to get his son killed. Taking advantage of the fact that his sister Holika could not be burnt by fire, he made Prahlad sit on Holika’s lap and made them sit on fire. However, Lord Vishnu came to the rescue and saved Prahlad, while burning Holika. What they did not know that Holika could be unhurt by fire only if she sits in it alone! At the same time, a ferocious avatar of Lord Vishnu – Lord Narasimha (half human, half lion) – arised from a pillar and killed Hiranyakashyap. Thus, not going against Lord Brahma’s boon, Lord Narasimha appeared in the form of half human-half lion, and killed Hiranyakashyap at dusk, on the doorstep, and on his lap with his lion claws.

How is Holika Dahan performed?
The Holika Dahan begins with cleaning the site where the ritual is to be performed with Gangajal and cow dung. The idols of Holika and Prahlad are created with cow dung and placed at the center. Using a wooden pole and hay, a 7-8 feet tall heap is created. The Puja begins with praying to Lord Vishnu and Lord Ganesha while chanting mantras and making offerings of flowers, fruits, haldi and kumkum. Then, Devi Ambika and Lord Narasimha are worshipped.  People circumambulate the heap a few times tying a raw yarn and empty the water around the heap too. Then, the heap is lighted with fire, around which devotees do a Parikrama.

You may now have understood that Holika Dahan marks how steady faith can surpass even the test of fire. So, from this year onwards, make it a point to worship and pray to the holy Holika before indulging yourself in the colourful and fun-filled celebrations of Dhuleti the next morning.
